National Manufacturing Day is an annual event that takes place on the first Friday of October. It’s a day that’s set aside to allow us all to fully appreciate our manufacturers and how much work they put into the manufacturing process.

Manufacturing Day was founded in 2012 by the Founding Partner Fabricators and Manufacturers Association as an annual celebration of the modern feats of manufacturing. They sought to educate the public and increase awareness of local manufacturing jobs.

Organizations that have been staunch supporters of the national Manufacturing Day include:

  • National Association of Manufacturers (NAM)
  • Manufacturing Institute (MI)
  • National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST)
  • Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP)

The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) continues to produce Manufacturing Day, and even offers a website where anyone can go and find a local Manufacturing Day event or register to throw one of their own. Since 2012, Manufacturing Day participation has grown enormously and now includes manufacturers in all 50 states.

According to last year’s survey by Deloitte, the impact on students who attended a Manufacturing Day event was very positive:

  • 89% became more aware of manufacturing jobs in their communities
  • 84% more convinced that manufacturing provides careers that are more interesting or rewarding
  • 64% were inspired to pursue manufacturing careers
  • 71% would spread the good news about manufacturing to family, friends, and acquaintances

Manufacturing Day is a fun way to get people interested in the manufacturing industry! There are so many fascinating aspects to the manufacturing process, and so many new exciting advances in manufacturing technology. It’s a day for manufacturers to showcase their work and share some helpful tips with other like-minded individuals. Those who are interested in a career in manufacturing will find this especially useful.

Last year, almost 3,000 manufacturers opened their doors to students all across the United States. The students were shown throughout the facilities in order to promote a better understanding of how American manufacturers do what they do.

American manufacturing is steadily revitalizing and now is the time to inspire the next generation of hard working manufacturers. From the machines, to the ever-advancing technology, to the complex service standards - the manufacturing industry is a constantly shifting landscape. Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone there to guide you through the steps? Someone with, say, over 30 years of experience in the furniture manufacturing business?
